Utrecht, November 1, 2024 – The need for qualitative and quantitative data exchange within the logistics sector is high. This topic is central to the ICT&Logistiek and Logistica Next trade fairs. Corien den Ouden, exhibition manager: “Many companies in the logistics sector are working on collecting the right data. Today, data is exchanged in many different ways and forms. For further innovation in the logistics sector, it is crucial that a good and, if possible, standardized system for data exchange is established quickly. Sebastian Piest, a researcher at the University of Twente, will share his insights on this during ICT&Logistiek. Embarking on an AI Expedition: Ensure a Good Idea and Usable Data
“A company that wants to start working with artificial intelligence (AI) must at least have a good idea and cleaned data,” says Sebastian Piest. “Industry organizations evofenedex and TLN conduct biennial research, and it consistently shows that the quality of data is subpar. If you want to start an AI project, you must first clean the data. It might work for a small project, but when you scale up, it still goes wrong. And that’s a shame because it causes people on the work floor to lose trust in AI, and as a company, you lose a lot of money. It is also quite a task to get data in order. However, nowadays, you can use AI to help with cleaning.” Piest emphasizes that the logistics sector is still at the beginning of large-scale AI application in logistics processes. “It won’t be the case that models will make all kinds of decisions and initiate processes on their own. Human oversight will always be necessary. This is legally regulated.”
Logistics Chain Holders Sign Declaration of Intent for Standard Core Set of Primary Data
On November 7, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Topsector Logistiek, TKI Dinalog, Connekt, Transport and Logistics Netherlands, Stichting Uniforme Transport, Dutch Association of Logistics and Transport IT Suppliers, and the Central Bureau of Statistics will sign the declaration of intent for a standard core set of primary data. The parties aim to establish comparable primary data to solve issues from different perspectives and complexities. Establishing a primary dataset and making agreements on how this data can be shared offers many benefits for both businesses and the government and other stakeholders in transport and logistics. Herman Wagter, Topsector Logistiek, Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management: “Almost everyone is looking for roughly the same current data: the people in operations have it. With a simple standard, it becomes affordable for IT service providers to deliver it. And that will bring great benefits to the sector and the Dutch industry.”
